Team History
Since it's inception in 2003, the Eckerd College
Tritons men's lacrosse team has built a strong
tradition of success and growth. Original
founder's and co-captains Kyle Sullivan ('06)
and Ray Vasilas ('06) took it upon themselves to
organize all interested players, garner funding
from the
school, locate a coach, and enter into the well
established Florida Lacrosse League.
With the support and guidance of coach Tony
Collette, a new legacy of lacrosse continues to
gain momentum
at Eckerd College.
During the team's first season of competitive
play, the Tritons completed a perfect 10-0
season and won the Florida Lacrosse League's
Division II state title, which was an incredible
accomplishment considering the Tritons team
roster included a total of only thirteen
players. Despite the lack of depth and
the obvious physical challenges it posed, the
Tritons gutted out every game, relying on each
player to do his fair share, and then
some. Sophomore standout attackman Ray Vasilas
('06)
was named championship MVP in addition to being
the league's leading scorer for the 2003-2004
season.
Eager to reestablish their presence and to
reclaim their title, Eckerd came into the
2004-2005 season with more experience, a little more
depth, and a strong freshmen class. These assets
lead to another successful season, finishing
with an 11-1
record and another state title. In the 2005
championship game, junior standout midfielder Anthony Vasilas
('06) had a stellar performance,
leading the Tritons to a championship victory
and a tournament MVP trophy.
The Tritons are now entering their first season
in the South Eastern Lacrosse Conference of the
USL-MDIA and have high hopes for it's inaugural
season.
